On the Back Bar with Krute
Owner of Craft Room in Bangkok
Up until recently craft beer was pretty hard to find in Asia, tell us about how you guys got started?
About 2 years ago a friend introduced me to my first craft beer. It was called Chalawa and it was Thailand first legal craft beer! I then went on to try many different beers and visit different bars until one day talking to another friend we said to each other, why not open our own place?
We started with a very small venue, 11 seats at the most, but over time business excelled. We found our little craft beer room to be a lot more popular with the public than expected! Because of that we decided to open a second store with a larger capacity.
And now this is number 3. We are celebrating our one year anniversary of the Craft Room Sathorn so its a special time.
Do you feel there will be a craft beer boom in Thailand similar to the UK and America?
Yes it started booming around a year ago and its still expanding across the country. We have a lot of the big American and english brands in but Thai craft beer is huge and even we have decided to brew our own!
The brewery will be in Australia but we are very excited to make our own. The creative process behind it is very exciting.
tell us a bit more about the concept of the bar? Why craft room
The people who come here love beer. Its called ‘room’ because we want it to be personal so our customers can make friends easily and unite over preferences on beer! With such a small place it’s easy for our guests to join in with conversations and really feel like its a room at home.
There’s a family aspect for our regulars and we have many office workers come by after they finish to relax and talk to new people.
Lastly, What are you drinking these days?
Beer of course! I still love IPA’s but especially this one called Deschutes from Oregon.
